Face to face with Street Musician (Atlantic City) it threw up evocations of the Grateful Dead, ’70s war vets and Hunter.S.Thompson-esque characters. Burning brightly in all of Furnas’ works is the fluorescent orange end of a cigarette. It’s psychedelic orange made me smile, and want to smoke a cigarette. These characters dive out from the canvas and drag you into their world, heady with cigarette smoke and on the corners and dives of American folk-lore and street life.
Barnaby Furnas - The Intimates is currently on at Modern Art gallery W1 until 9th April
