John Stezaker @ The Whitechapel Gallery

British artist John Stezaker meticuously collages movie stills, vintage postcards and book illustrations to create new works. With the meticulous placement of picture postcards the voids of cave grottos, railway viaducts replace the faces of the original portraits, a space which seemingly creates a door into the human psyche.

This adroit placing also works well in the co-joining of female and male actor publicity shots - this peculiar marriage of the two faces, made me think of the likes of Hollywood star Dirk Bogarde, having to play it straight both on screen off, he was a man of more than one identity; Stezaker’s work compounds this idea, nothing is quite what it seems.

Catch John Stezaker at The Whitechapel Gallery before it finishes on 18th March.
